Winter is a challenging period for scales. Water freezing at the platform edges, ice accumulating underneath and road salt affect both weighing accuracy and the lifespan of the scale.
Why are ice and snow a problem?
Ice trapped in the gap between the platform and the foundation prevents the platform from moving freely. In this case, part of the load is transferred to the foundation instead of the load cells, and the scale weighs incorrectly. Snow accumulating on the platform causes zero drift.
What to do before winter
- Cleaning drainage channels and gullies
- Cleaning under the platform and edge gaps
- Checking junction box seals and cable entries
- Paint and corrosion control, touch-up if necessary
- Calibration and corner check
What to watch during winter
- Snow on the platform should be cleared before weighing, and zero should be checked.
- Ice formation in the edge gaps should be checked regularly.
- Road salt accelerates corrosion on the platform surface and in the load cell area; when temperatures rise, washing with fresh water is recommended.
